Overview

The Charge Nurse is accountable for excellence in the clinical practice of nursing and the delivery of patient care. He/She directs and oversees function and activities of the assigned unit.  He/She recommends, develops and implements policies, procedures, standards and regulations for personnel, patients, medical staff and the public.  He/She assumes the duties of the Director in his/her absence.

Responsibilities

Ensures hospital compliance with professional, regulatory, and government standard of care.

Ensure the satisfactory completion of all department clinical procedures by implementing strategies that maximize the effectiveness of medical department. Including coordination, planning and conducting of patient care and by being a resource to the staff.

Organize, supervise, and evaluate nursing activities by maintaining staff to adequately care out continuity of care and level of care by facilitating and implementing the use of multidisciplinary team approach. Also demonstrate knowledge of needs for specific unit.

Evokes in staff sense of responsibility and accountability for the work performance and continuous improvement. He/She also holds self-accountable to same standards.

Participates in committee and task force function as assigned specific to unit or hospital wide.

Performs coaching and mentoring of staff to improve staff competencies.

Evaluates and adjusts departmental process to ensure department expectation and goals are obtained in daily operations.

Attends leadership meeting to discuss and resolve issues affecting department.

Intervenes with, and performs service recovery with patients and visitors. Reports up events for tracking and trending.

Ensures departmental expectations are followed 24/7.

Qualifications

  • Education

 

      a.) RN graduate of accredited School of Nursing

      b.) Prefer BSN

  • Licensure/Certification

 

  • Must have a valid, current license by the Missouri State Board of Nursing
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required
  • ACLS
  • PALS required
  • TNCC or TNS
