Overview

The Emergency Department Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for delivering high-quality, compassionate nursing care to patients in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. The ED RN provides direct patient care, collaborates with the healthcare team, and plays a critical role in managing patient care from triage to discharge. This role requires strong clinical skills, the ability to make quick decisions, and the capacity to manage multiple priorities simultaneously. 

Responsibilities

1. Patient Assessment & Triage:
• Conduct rapid, thorough assessments of patients upon arrival in the Emergency Department, prioritizing care based on the severity of illness or injury.
• Perform initial triage, recognizing life-threatening conditions and initiating appropriate interventions.
• Continuously monitor and reassess patients’ conditions, adjusting care plans as necessary.

 

2. Direct Patient Care:
• Provide direct nursing care, including administering medications, performing procedures, and delivering interventions according to established protocols and orders.
• Implement evidence-based practices to manage a wide range of emergency situations, from minor injuries to critical, life-threatening conditions.
• Assist with and perform emergency procedures, such as wound care, IV insertion, intubation, and CPR.

 

3. Collaboration & Communication:
• Work closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, and other members of the healthcare team to develop and implement patient care plans.
• Communicate effectively with patients and their families, providing clear explanations of care, procedures, and discharge instructions.
• Participate in interdisciplinary rounds, sharing observations and insights that contribute to patient care decisions.

 

4. Documentation & Compliance:
• Maintain accurate, detailed, and timely documentation of all patient care activities in the electronic health record (EHR).
• Ensure compliance with hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory standards, including infection control and patient safety protocols.
• Participate in quality assurance and improvement activities, contributing to the ongoing enhancement of emergency care services.

 

5. Patient Advocacy & Education:
• Serve as an advocate for patients, ensuring that their needs and preferences are respected throughout the care process.
• Provide education to patients and their families about their conditions, treatments, and follow-up care.
• Support patients in understanding and navigating their care, especially during times of crisis or uncertainty.

 

6. Professional Development:
• Stay current with advances in emergency nursing by participating in continuing education, certifications, and professional development opportunities.
• Contribute to a positive work environment by mentoring and supporting less experienced nurses and students.
• Participate in department meetings, training sessions, and other activities that promote teamwork and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

Education:

Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) is required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred.

 

Experience:
1-2 years of nursing experience, preferably in an emergency department or critical care setting is desired.

 

Certifications:
• Current, unrestricted RN license in MO.
• Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications, and trauma advanced certifications (TNCC, ATCN) are required.
• Pediatric Course (ENPC) certifications is preferred.

 

Skills:
• Strong clinical skills and critical thinking abilities, with the capacity to perform under pressure.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on patient-centered care.
• Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment and collaborate with other healthcare professionals.
• Proficiency in using electronic health records (EHR) and other healthcare technologies.

 

Working Conditions:

• The role involves working in a high-stress, fast-paced environment with exposure to emergency situations and critically ill patients.
• Shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, is required.
• The position requires standing for extended periods and may involve lifting, moving, or assisting patients.
