Overview

The Obstetrical Technician is a nursing or assistant nursing position on the Women’s Health and Newborn Care Unit. The Obstetrical Technician provides supportive nursing care as a member of the health care team. The department includes functioning in a role between all three units including labor and delivery, NICU, and women’s health & newborn care. The role includes acting as a scrub technician during Cesarean Sections and maintaining of the Cesarean Section Delivery room. Employee responsible for a 30-minute response time to facility upon being called in. This position does have additional cesarean scrub call outside of scheduled hours, which typically consists of one 48 hour weekend of cesarean scrub call every 4 week period.(1900 on Friday to 1900 on Sunday)  

 

The Obstetrical Technician functions under the direction of the professional registered nurse. The professional registered nurse is ultimately responsible for the coordination and delivery of nursing care to women and newborns.

 

Responsibilities

  

  1. Maintain readiness for Cesarean Section at all times while here, including cleaning, setup, restocking, and equipment checks.
  2. Scrub for cesarean sections
  3. Maintain cleanliness and setup of all three units, including vaginal delivery rooms, treatment rooms, and outpatient rooms.
  4. Maintain supplies through restocking and ordering throughout entire department including women’s health and newborn care, NICU, and Labor & Delivery       
  5. Assists in education of other obstetrical technicians as needed
  6. Demonstrates ways to enhance the quality of communication between department and its customers, fellow employees, other departments, physicians, and the community.
  7. Fosters and promotes teamwork within department and the organization as a whole. Resolves conflicts constructively, an in a timely manner.

     Clerical duties, including but not limited to:

  • Computerized order entry.
  • Chart preparation, assembly and disassembly.
  • Transfer paperwork
  • Putting together educational materials

     8. Patient care including but not limited to:

    1. Vital sign.
    2. Patient hygiene and care of daily living for all ages.
    3. Transferring patient to and from beds and chairs.
    4. Transferring patients to and from other units.
    5. Newborn hearing screens.
    6. Newborn PKU screening
    7. Glucose measurements
    8. Intake and output
    9. Assist with patient positioning
    10. Assist with delivery table setup

    9. Functions within scope of practice depending on certification or licensure.

 

While floating to other nursing departments in the hospital to function within scope of practice when not needed on WHNC. May not enter rooms of patients that are on isolation precautions and need to remain in a role that enables the ability to return immediately to WHNC if called upon.

Qualifications

Education/Licensure/Certification

  • Can be any of the following in accordance to the assigned job posting:
    • Surgical tech certification within 6 months,
    • Licensed in practical nursing/GPN upon hire
    • Approved by Perioperative services for scrub role as a certified nursing assistant

Work Experience

  • Working with perinatal, neonatal, or gynecological patient populations is a plus, but not required.
  • Additional skills not required, but beneficial include:
    • Secretarial
    • Patient care
    • Operative
    • Phlebotomy
