Overview

The Medical Laboratory Technician will work in all areas of the laboratory.  Those being chemistry, microbiology, blood bank, hematology, urinalysis, blood gases, coagulation, and serology.  Tests will be performed on blood, body fluids, and tissues as ordered by the patient’s physician.  **Must be able to meet job requirements for phlebotomist as required.

 

The Medical Laboratory Technician reports directly to the Laboratory Supervisor or Laboratory Director.

 

Med Tech 

 

The Medical Technologist –Registered will work in all areas of the laboratory.  Those being chemistry, microbiology, blood bank, hematology, urinalysis, blood gases, coagulation, and serology.  Tests will be performed on blood, body fluids, and tissues as ordered by the patient’s physician.

 

The Medical Technologist – Registered reports directly to the Section Lead, Chief Tech or Laboratory Director.  This staff position once deemed trained and competent will be responsible for performing waived, moderate and high complexity test resulting unsupervised. 

Responsibilities

1. Review all policies and procedures initially and at the time of revisions or when new procedures are offered and applicable to their job responsibilities. Will recommend improvements as warranted. Will also stay current with communication requirements from various  sources (e.g., lab leadership, organizational communications, etc.).

 

2. Operates all laboratory equipment as trained. Assures quality assurance and quality control parameters are met prior to releasing diagnostic information.

3. Participates and performs competency challenges in the same manner as patient testing and maintains knowledge base of clinical laboratory practices. Participates in continuing education.

 

4. Performs patient testing in an appropriate manner such that the quality and accuracy of results are acceptable. Identifies and corrects problems with specimen/instruments that could adversely affect patient care.

 

5. Participates and successfully passes proficiency testing requirements. Participates in special projects as required by supervisor and/or director.

 

6. Other duties as assigned.

 

Med Tech 

 

1. Review all policies and procedures initially and at the time of revisions or when new procedures are offered and applicable to their job responsibilities. Will recommend improvements as warranted. Will also stay current with communication requirements from various      sources (e.g., lab leadership, organizational communications, etc.).

 

2. Operates all laboratory equipment as trained. Is competent with performing maintenance and calibration as necessary. Performs, monitors, and approves QC requirements as necessary.

 

3. Is current with acceptable levels of CEU requirements based upon certification requirements as necessary.

 

4. Performs patient testing in an appropriate manner such that the quality and accuracy of results are acceptable. Identifies and corrects problems with specimen/instruments that could adversely affect patient care.

 

5. Participates and successfully passes proficiency testing requirements. Participates in special projects as required by lab leadership.

 

6. Will use applicable safety devices and/or PPE’s when handling and testing biohazardous materials.

 

7. Performs phlebotomy duties as assigned.

Qualifications

1. Education:
  a.) Associates Degree in Science or Laboratory Science / Medical Laboratory Technician Clinical Program – qualified to meet CFR 493.1489 personnel requirements; able to perform waived, moderate and high complexity testing.

 

2. Licensure/Certification:
  a.) MLT(ASCP, AMT or equivalent) or 3 months documented training in each specialty in which high complexity testing is performed.

 

3. Work Experience:
  a.) Technically competent in trained laboratory sections and is capable of performing patient care for all age groups.

 

Med Tech

 

1. Education
 a.) Bachelors of Science Degree including completion of an approved Clinical Laboratory Science program.

 

2. Licensure/Certification
 a.) MT (ASCP, AMT or equivalent)

3. Work Experience
 a.) Technically competent in trained laboratory sections and is capable of
     performing patient care for all age groups.
