Overview

The Charge Nurse is accountable for excellence in the clinical practice of nursing and the delivery of patient care.  He/She directs and oversees function and activities of the assigned unit.  He/She recommends, develops and implements policies, procedures, standards and regulations for personnel, patients, medical staff and the public.  He/She assumes the duties of the Nurse Director in his/her absence.

 

The Charge Nurse reports directly to Nurse Director.

 

Responsibilities

  1. Ensures hospital compliance with professional, regulatory, and government standard of care via participation in committee and task force functions as assigned. Assists in translating those standards for staff.         

 

  1. Ensures the satisfactory completion of all patient care as well as outpatient procedures by implementing strategies that maximize the effectiveness of the department. This includes planning for care, conducting care, being a resource for staff and communicating effectively to provide for safe multidisciplinary care. 

 

  1. Organize, supervise, and evaluate nursing activities by maintaining staff to adequately care out continuity of care and level of care by facilitating and implementing the use of multidisciplinary team approach.

 

  1. Evokes in staff sense of responsibility and accountability for the work performance and continuous improvement. He/She also holds self-accountable to same standards. Is a role model

 

  1. Provides leadership for the unit by providing for safe and efficient staffing. Works in concert with director, assistant director, supervisor and co-workers from labor and delivery, women’s health and nursery to accomplish this goal.

 

  1. Demonstrates knowledge of Women’s Health and Labor/Delivery. Assists with cross training as assigned.

 

  1. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

 

Education:

  • RN graduate of Accredited School of Nursing.
  • Prefer BSN.

 

Licensure/Certification:

  • Must have a valid, current license by the Missouri State Board of Nursing.
  • Basic Life Support/BLS certification

Work Experience:

  • Successful completion of hospital orientation.
  • Minimum one-year experience as a staff nurse.
