Overview

The Manager of the Medical/Surgical Unit is responsible for the daily operations, management, and performance of the Medical/Surgical unit. This includes overseeing nursing staff, maintaining high-quality patient care standards, managing budgets, and ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations. The manager will act as a mentor and leader to the nursing team, fostering an environment of professional development and collaboration.

 

The Medical Surgical Unit Manager reports directly to the Medical Surgical Unit Director.

Responsibilities

1. Leadership & Staff Management:
  a.) Supervise, mentor, and evaluate nursing staff performance.
  b.) Develop and implement staffing schedules to ensure adequate coverage.
  c.) Promote a positive work environment and resolve staff conflicts.
  d.) Conduct regular team meetings to discuss unit goals, challenges, and updates.

 

2. Patient Care Oversight:
  a.) Ensure delivery of high-quality, evidence-based patient care.
  b.) Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement patient care plans.
  c.) Monitor patient satisfaction and implement strategies for improvement.

 

3. Operational Management:
  a.) Oversee daily unit operations, including resource allocation and workflow management.
  b.) Ensure the unit meets all regulatory and accreditation standards.
  c.) Monitor and manage budgets, supplies, and equipment.

 

4. Quality Improvement:
  a.) Develop and implement quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes.
  b.) Analyze performance metrics and create action plans to address areas for improvement.
  c.) Participate in hospital-wide quality committees and initiatives.

 

5. Education and Professional Development
  a.) Provide ongoing education and training opportunities for staff.
  b.) Encourage professional growth through certifications, continuing education, and leadership development.
  c.) Act as a resource for clinical knowledge and best practices.

 

6. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

1. Education:
  a.) Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) is preferred; a Master’s degree in
       Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or a related field is ideal.

 

2. Licensure/Certification:
  a.) Current, unrestricted RN license in MO.
  b.) Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS),
       Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification preferred.
  c.) Certification as a Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN) is
       preferred.

 

3. Work Experience:
a.) Minimum of 3-5 years of clinical experience in a Medical Surgical
      setting, with at least 2 years in a leadership, management, or educational role.

 

4. Skills:
  a.) Strong leadership and team building skills.
  b.) Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  c.) Proficiency in budget management and resource allocation.
  d.) Knowledge of healthcare regulations, compliance standards, and
       quality improvement methodologies.
  e.) Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
  f.) Proficiency in using healthcare information systems and technology
