Overview

Surgical Technologists are allied health professionals with specialized education who function as members of the surgical team in the role of scrub person. LPN Scrub Techs are LPN that receive on-the-job training. In collaboration with the surgical team members providing surgical care to patients, they ensure that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. They will work within their scope of practice.

 

The Surgical Technologist reports directly to the RN circulator, charge nurse and/or team leader.

Responsibilities

1. Gathers checks and opens supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure. Sets up the sterile back table and mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medication/solutions needed        for procedure.

 

2. Performs the surgical scrub, donning and doffing of gown and gloves and personal protective equipment, and assists gowning/gloving others. Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during the         procedure.

 

3. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies during the procedure. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization at the end of case.

 

4. Demonstrates teamwork through communication, cooperation, coordination, and conflict resolution with others and implementing multidisciplinary actions to provide a continuity of care.

 

5. Provides for accurate care and handling of specimens.

 

6. Follow all standards and policies providing safe patient care as in surgical counts, handwashing, sterile consciousness, time outs and debriefs, etc.

 

7. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

1. Education:
  a.) Graduate of Surgical Technologist program accredited through ARC/STSA or
       LPN with on-the-job training.

 

2. Licensure/Certification:
   a.) Must have a valid, current MO Scrub Technologist Diploma; Certified Scrub
         Tech or MO LPN License.
   b.) BLS certification required within 6 months of employment.

 

3. Work Experience:
   a.) Successful completion of hospital orientation.
